I believe that artists can play an important role in helping women of the Third Millennium realize their full potentials. My art tries to restore that part of ancient goddess culture that honored women for their sacred, life-giving, life-affirming powers. Powers associated with the moon and wild animals. Qualities associated with art and aesthetics, dance and music, singing, chanting and ecstatic states of being. I put the emphasis not so much on what the artist can imagine and translate into a visual image but, rather, what the viewer can imagine from that image. I think that this can best be achieved by creating a figure as realistically as possible, one that the viewer can identify with. Then, I place the figure in an imaginative setting that is symbolic or metaphorical. By combining the realistic with the imaginative, it's possible to move the viewer into uncharted landscapes where a woman has the luxury to reinvent herself in bold, imaginative ways. I believe the seeds for transformation are planted when, for example, the artist creates images that enable a woman to imaginatively visualize that part of her self that has been systematically censored for thousands of years. My art is an attempt to reconnect woman to her prehistoric, matriarchal roots: her ancient relationship to nature, her goddess-based spirituality, and to the once honored, sacred mystery of her body. A painting is successful when it opens a door so that a woman of the 21st century can once again, as in Neolithic times, see her body as holy and her mission in life as sacred. With such an image of herself locked in her mind, a woman in contemporary times can be true to her empowered ancient being and, as in times past, command respect and honor wherever she is seen. Such a personal vision of oneself can eventually allow the Goddess, who has lived within us since the dawn of womankind, to be awakened. I believe such an awakening can lead us into intimate attunement to the Great Earth Mother and the Cosmic Energies. A liberated woman, true to her inner goddess, radiates an energy that can help the men in her life gain the same respect for women as in Neolithic times. Both men and women, myself included, would benefit from a deeper respect and understanding of just what it means to be woman. I think this is vitally important if we are to escape the abuses of the past and present time. With such an understanding we can move into the Third Millennium with a renewed sense of dignity and self-worth, true to the goddess Isis. Kimberly Berg |
